History of Wimbledon

Wimbledon is the world’s oldest tennis tournament. Founded in 1877 at the All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club, the ‘Wimbledon’ name comes from the area in which it resides, a suburb of southwest London.

Types of Wimledon events

The tournament has five different main events: Men and Women’s singles, Men and Women’s doubles and mixed doubles with extra tournaments held for junior, senior and wheelchair players.

Location & Stadiums of Wimbledon

The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club hosts Wimbledon each year. There are two main courts, ’The Centre Court’, fitted with a retractable roof to stop rain delays and ‘No.1 Court’. The other 17 courts are used for other events hosted by the club.

Court Surface

Wimbledon is the only Grand Slam that is played on grass. The courts are sown with 100% perennial ryegrass.

Former Greats

Some of the greatest tennis greats have played and have been very successful at Wimbledon. Formers greats include: Pete Sampras(7), Roger Federer(8), Bjorn Borg(5), Fred Perry(3) and in recent times: Novak Djokovic (6) and Andy Murray(2).
